Mid-Week Video Break
I admit, this video is a bit old and is more about feminism than veganism . . . but Nellie McKay is a vegan and if you stick with the video long enough (and you will want to because the song is awesome), you will catch a reference to vegetarians:
The Professional Vegan is a blog for lawyers, bankers, consultants, and other overworked professionals who are vegans, yet work in industries in which the prevailing dress code requires donning and carrying absurd amounts of leather, wool, silk, and other animal products. The Professional Vegan offers fashionable, sophisticated, and trendy alternatives for an animal-product-free life.
The Professional Vegan highlights vegan-friendly clothing and accessories according to the following schedule: _Monday - work-appropriate suit _Tuesday - work-appropriate clothing item _Wednesday - work-appropriate shoes or bag _Thursday - work-appropriate clothing item _Friday - vegan-friendly accessory _Saturday / Sunday - weekend-wear or _____ weekend-only appropriate accessory
The Professional Vegan intersperses posts regarding life as a professional vegan throughout this schedule.
I am a twenty-something ex-investment banker, now lawyer, working for the federal government. I have a closet full of sophisticated and fashionable professional clothes and accessories, most of which are non-vegan; I am committed to slowly replacing each non-vegan item with a vegan-friendly alternative that is as sophisticated and fasionable.
When I graduated from law school in May 2008, I not only became a lawyer, but also a vegan. Browsing through my closet, I realized that I cannot assemble a single outfit with what constitutes my current professional wardrobe. Almost everything contains wool, silk, or leather. Replacing it all right now while working for the federal government and paying off law school loans is impossible (and wasteful). So, I decided to replace a few items initially (and then donate what I replaced), continue to wear what I own, and to slowly replace other items as they wear out and as my discretionary income allows.
That was until I began shopping. Almost none of the vegan clothing for sale compares in sophistication and professional style to my current clothing. But, I am a shopaholic and know I can find items that are just as or more sophisticated and trendy as my current pieces. I bought my first replacement item after two months of searching. This blog chronicles my search for replacements, highlighting interesting vegan clothing and accessories for both women and men that I stumble upon during my search.
Sophisticated, fashionable, professional vegan-friendly clothing does exist!
